Frequently Asked Questions
NHML specializes in mechanical testing, failure analysis, chemical analysis, and metallography. Please contact us for more details as to how we can help meet your specific materials testing needs.
How large a sample is required for testing?
Answer: For special items or if a limited amount of material is available, please contact NHML first.
Type of Testing Sheet 1 Plate 1 Angle Bar Pipe Tubing Chemical 2 2" x 2" 2" x 2" 2" Long 2" Long 2" Long 2" Long Tensile 2"W x 12"L Note 3 12" Long 6" Long
Note 4Note 5 12" Long Hardness 2" x 2" 2" x 2" 2" x 2" 2" Long 2" Long 2" Long
Note:
- Plate up to ¾" thick requires 2"W x 18"L; Plate greater than ¾" thick requires 2"W x 6"L
- Bar or wire under ¼" diameter requires 18" Long
- Pipe up to ¾" wall thickness requires 12" Long; Pipe greater than ¾" wall thickness requires 6" Long
- Grain direction is very important when submitting sheet or plate for testing. Always mark grain direction with an arrow.
- When performing chemical analysis only, supply the above referenced size coupon. If other testing is to be performed (i.e. tensile, flattening, etc.), a separate piece for chemical analysis is not needed.
How long will a test take to perform?
- Answer: In most instances, within five working days. Expedited delivery is available.
Do we do X-Ray testing?
- Answer: NHML does not perform non-destructive tests such as Radiography, Dye Penetrant, or Magnetic Particle Inspection. However, we will be pleased to recommend someone in your area.
Can we perform on-site testing?
- Answer: Yes, in some instances. Please contact NHML for confirmation.
Does NHML do environmental testing?
- Answer: Contact us for special analyses such as incinerator ash, tank residues, and research samples. For routine environmental testing, check the Yellow Pages under "Laboratories, Environmental".
