News: Testing for Toxic Lead May Not Be Your Only Concern
October 5, 2007
This past summer the words China, lead, and lead testing were prominent in the news. The Wall Street Journal had an article "Lead Toxins Take a Global Round Trip" exposing the use of old electronic parts in the manufacturing of jewelry. The outcome was high lead content.
The use of lead by manufacturers outside the Unites States has caused much concern. Inexpensive home test kits are available for lead analysis and some laboratories offer lead analyses for as little as $20.00 per sample. These options are appropriate if lead is the only concern. A recent analysis of an imported bracelet performed by New Hampshire Materials Laboratory indicated that the item was "lead free", but was composed almost entirely of the similarly toxic metal cadmium.
Before, these issues were pushed to the front headlines of the news. Some small jewelry manufacturers had foresight. They requested New Hampshire Materials Laboratory to do chemical analysis on their products prior to selling them. Our materials lab has performed chemical analyses and testing of imported toys, jewelry, and souvenir items for more than five years. Whether your company is large or small, we are here to assist you. We are committed to ensuring that our clients receive the whole answer.
